It is also a place closely connected with the development of some of the biggest names in show jumping, including Franke Sloothaak and Ludger Beerbaum, whose careers became part of the legacy surrounding Paul Schockemöhle’s vision for excellence.
Who is Paul Schockemöhle?
Few people have influenced European horse breeding as profoundly as Paul Schockemöhle.
An Olympic medalist, entrepreneur and breeder, Schockemöhle transformed his passion for horses into one of the world’s most respected breeding programs. Today, his stallion station supplies genetics to breeders across Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia.

A Conversation with Bart Kools
During our visit, Equine Story had the privilege of speaking with Bart Kools, who has worked at the Paul Schockemöhle Stallion Station since 2000.
With more than two decades of experience, Bart guided us through the daily operation of the breeding center, explaining each step of the process—from stallion management and semen collection to laboratory analysis, cryopreservation and worldwide semen distribution.

For breeders around the world, Balou du Rouet represents one of the most successful jumping bloodlines of the modern era, producing horses that continue to compete at international Grand Prix level.
Technology Matters. But Culture Matters More.
Modern laboratories, advanced reproductive technologies and experienced veterinarians are only part of the story.
What impressed me most was something much simpler.
Respect.
Respect for every horse.
Respect for every detail.
Respect for the responsibility of preserving and improving future generations of sport horses.
At the end of our interview, Bart Kools summarized that philosophy in one simple sentence:
“We respect the animals, and the horses respect us.”
